“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is a song introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis.

The song as originally written was deemed to be too somber and songwriter Hugh Martin initially resisted changes. Eventually, however, he changed some of the lyrics to make the song more upbeat. For instance, the lines “It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past” became “Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight“.
