Fans of the movie “Elf,” the 2003 holiday comedy starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf, may remember the dinner scene in which Buddy lists the elf food groups after swigging down an entire 2-liter plastic bottle of Coke at the dinner table. “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups – candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup,” he says. He then produces a vial of maple syrup to pour on his meal – a spaghetti dinner.

If you haven’t seen this movie about a man adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his biological father, you’re in for a treat. Will Ferrell is delightful, and the supporting cast is great. James Caan stars as Buddy’s real dad, Ed Asner is Santa Claus (the real one!), Mary Steenburgen is Buddy’s stepmom and Bob Newhart is Papa Elf. This fun holiday movie is clever enough to keep the attention of everyone in your family, from young to old. Need a sneak peak? Or perhaps a refresher if you’re already a fan?

Based on the popular song written by Katherine K. Davis in 1941, this new Little Drummer Boy movie stars Junior Asparagus as the little drummer boy, Aaron. Since Elf on the Shelf was published, thousands of kids have joined in the fun holiday tradition of having a scout elf visit their home and bring back regular reports to Santa Claus on whether they’ve been naughty or nice. Now those kids can get a look at what it’s like to be one of Santa’s secret helpers.

Elf on the Shelf: An Elf’s Story will make its debut on CBS TV the day after Thanksgiving, and the new Christmas DVD for 2011 will be released the next day, November 26. This animated tale follows the adventures of Chippey, a scout elf who is assigned to a boy named Taylor who can’t decide whether he believes in Santa and Christmas magic. When Taylor breaks the most important Elf on the Shelf rule, the little scout elf loses his magic and the family loses its elf. But through the power of love and forgiveness, both Chippey and Taylor discover that true belief in Christmas isn’t something that can be taught.

Disney’s Prep and Landing DVD
This animated Disney Christmas special first aired in 2009, but Disney is releasing it for the first time on DVD this year. The story follows Wayne, an elf in Santa’s elite “Prep and Landing” unit, a team of elves who work with military precision to ensure every house is ready for Santa’s arrival before he gets there. Their job is to ensure the path is clear for Santa to get in and out of the house quickly, safely and without a hitch. But Wayne has been doing this job for a long time and was just defeated in his quest for a promotion. Now he’s willing to let his new trainee, Lanny, take over while he slacks off. It’s a recipe for disaster, and Wayne has to save the day so one little boy’s Christmas won’t be ruined.

Barbie: A Perfect Christmas DVD
Any Barbie movie is sure to be a hit with little girls, and this will be no exception. In this holiday tale, Barbie and her sisters Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea are on their way to New York for Christmas, but when a snowstorm diverts their flight, they end up stranded in the remote town of Tannenbaum. To their surprise and delight, they discover magical experiences and new friends. Barbie and her sisters then put on a musical performance for the whole town to enjoy and discover that “being together is what really makes A Perfect Christmas.

Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure
In Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure DVD, viewers will get to hear Beethoven talk for the first time ever! Beethoven comes to the rescue in this film after an elf takes Santa’s sleigh and all the toys, and then crash-lands in a tree. When Santa’s magical bag of toys ends up in the wrong hands, Beethoven and his human companion Mason have to save the elf, get the toys, and make sure Christmas comes for children around the world.

I was only in second grade at the time and had learned the truth from our older brother. I must not have believed him at first because to prove his point he ushered me out to my grandparents’ mobile trailer where my parents had stashed the goodies. And there was the proof – all the toys and gifts we had asked Santa to bring. Eureka! My big brother had obviously stumbled upon a giant secret. Thinking that my sister should also be privy to this discovery, I promptly went to inform her that Santa didn’t exist.

I don’t remember her reaction to the news, but she says she cried. And 35 years later, she still reminds me of my evil deed and gives me a bad time about destroying her belief in Santa. It’s become something of a joke between us, but now that we both have children, I realize just how young she was when I broke the spell, and I feel bad that I was the one who took that magic away from her.

My own son is eight now, and I’m glad he still believes. I’ve tried to keep the magic going for as long as I can, by sending Christmas letters from Santa and reminding him to be on his best behavior to stay on Santa’s Nice List. This year I might even try showing him real Santa pictures of the jolly old elf in our house. But I imagine that some day soon – either this season or perhaps next – one of his friends will break the news and he’ll come to ask us the truth. What will I say?

I’ve learned from experience that often the best answer to these tricky questions is another question: what do YOU think? Often kids don’t want a big long explanation. It reminds me of the joke about a little boy who asked his mom where he came from and she went into a detailed explanation about the birds and the bees. When she finished he said, “But where do I come from? Johnny is from Chicago.”

So my first response will be to find out what he thinks. If he’s not ready to let go of the magic, I will let him continue to believe and tell him that I, too, believe, and we’ll leave it at that. But if, as I suspect, he’s too smart for that and realizes all those shopping mall Santas look different and no one could fly around the whole world in one night, then I’ll have to tell him the truth.

But when I do, I’ll tell him that I still believe in Santa. I believe that the spirit of giving that lives today in the myth of Santa comes to us from the very real spirit of Saint Nicholas, a generous soul who donated his fortune to the poor and spent his life helping those in need, particularly children. His compassion and generosity set a very real example for millions of people who have translated his good deeds into the legend of Santa.

And I believe we are always given gifts in life when we try our best, play well with others, and remember to use our manners. These are qualities Santa always looks for when deciding who goes on the Nice list and who goes on the Naughty list. But we don’t need the fear of Santa’s list to practice these traits. All we need to know is that these qualities will bring us gifts every day of our life. These gifts may not come in boxes, bags, or bows, but they will come to us in the form of lasting friendship, love, and happiness.

I also believe in the magic of Santa. I believe life is miraculous, magical and wonderful, just like Santa, but only those who are willing to believe in the mystery will be able to see the beauty in a world that is also full of war, hunger, hatred and fear. Just as with a belief in Santa, the magic will disappear as soon as you choose to let it go. Belief in magic takes patience and care. Many people cannot see small miracles that happen around them every day because they are so blinded by the trappings of our fast-paced society.

I believe what Santa gives to children and adults alike is the ability to see life through the eyes of a child. We are reminded that it’s important to play and laugh, to let our imagination run wild, and to hope for the impossible. These are things I can believe in.

I hope that when my son realizes Santa is only a symbol for all these good things, he won’t be too disappointed and will still want to share the legend of Santa Claus with his kids some day. I think the world would be a much sadder place without the jolly old elf. I only hope my son agrees.

They tradition began in England. Sir Henry Cole, a British inventor and civil servant, produced the first commercial holiday cards in 1843. He commissioned an artist named John Horsley to illustrate them, and Cole obliged by drawing a three-panel image that included a family raising their glasses for a toast above the words “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.” Cole sold over 2000 of the cards for a shilling a piece that year.

Other cards soon followed, although they didn’t look like the cards we’d think of today. Rather than having winter or religious themes, early Christmas cards depicted flowers and fairies and other images that looked forward to the coming of spring.

The first holiday cards in America weren’t offered until more than three decades later. In 1875 Louis Prang became the first printer to offer cards in America. The advent of the postcard brought an end to elaborate Victorian-style cards for awhile, but by the 1920s, cards with envelopes had returned.

Christmas cards have been continually evolving and changing since then. During the World Wars, patriotic themes were popular, while in the 1950s, cartoon illustrations and cards with risque humor caught on. Today you can get holiday cards with a wide range of images and greetings. Nostalgic, sentimental, and religious images continue to be popular, and, now you can also purchase many “unusual” Christmas cards that can do double-duty as Christmas letter, calendars or or tree ornaments. Today’s Christmas cards can be anything from humorous to religious, simple to ornate, small to large, and everything in between.

Unfortunately, sending out printed Christmas cards is a tradition that’s in danger of fading out as more high-tech options become available and more popular. In recent decades, the number of cards sent during the holidays has been declining. The estimated number of cards received by American households dropped from 29 in 1987 to 20 in 2004. Despite the decline, printed cards are still popular – 1.9 billion cards were sent in the U.S. in 2005 alone. The Who – Christmas & The Acid Queen Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970

At just thirteen months old, little Dax was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. He was given two bone marrow transplants as a part of emergency treatment; one from each of his parents. The doctors then told his parents that Dax would most likely not make it to see Christmas. This song is about the love of a family, and the coming together of an entire community to make sure that this little boy could have one last Christmas. His dad, determined that his son would see Christmas, put up the decorations early. The neighborhood caught on, and did the same. The whole town soon followed suit. A website was built telling his story. Soon, pictures were sent from all over the world of Christmas decorations that had been put up in his honor. Dax did lose his battle with Leukemia, but not before he got to see one last Christmas. Today, this little boy’s legacy lives on, and his parents are making sure it does. They were so touched by the care they received from St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, that they now have a desire to raise enough money to run the entire hospital for one day in honor of their son, Dax. MERRY CHRISTMAS

Despite the fact that Santa Claus is not predominant, his bright red suit is represented in the traditional flower of the season. This flower is the poinsettia, which has brilliant green and red leaves. The story connected with the poinsettia is really rather touching. It is believed that a young boy walking to the church to view the nativity scene showing the birth of Christ had realized on the way that he had no present to offer the Christ child. So, he gathered up several plain green branches and unwanted weeds to give. Many jeered as he walked into the church, but he was told that as long as his gift was from his heart, the child would value it. When he set his gift next to the manger, they changed into bright red and green leafs, and thus the poinsettia, or Christmas flower, was created.

The Mexican kids receive presents on Christmas day. They are blindfolded while they use a stick or a bat to try and break a decorated clay pinata that dangles and swings at the end of a string. Once the pinata has been broken, the children scampler to retrieve the candy that was inside the pinata. Those children who have been good also on January 6th receive a gift from the Three Wise Men, the same men who went to the newborn Christ child and brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Took the old video with the bad audio quality and put the MP3 version of the song I had on there. It syncs up pretty well but it gets a little off near the end. Pretty good though overall.

- Lucy calls Charlie Brown “Charlie” in a scene right before she talks about the commercialization of Christmas. This is the only time she ever calls him by his first name only in any Peanuts special. In all the other specials, she always calls him by his complete name – Charlie Brown.
